I’m Matt, the creator behind Bringing History To Life. I restore and enhance old photographs, colorize black-and-white images and use AI tools to create new interpretations and videos inspired by the past.
This site brings those visual projects together with articles about historical lives. A photograph can make someone from another century feel close to us. The history around it helps explain what we can know about that person, and what remains uncertain.
What you’ll find here
Browse the history articles for biographies, historical images and links to sources. On my social channels, you’ll also find restorations, colorizations and AI-created interpretations of historical photographs.
Original photographs and creative interpretations
An original photograph is evidence of a particular moment. Restoration, colorization and AI-generated motion involve interpretation, and may introduce details that the original does not record. A colorized image or recreated pose should not be treated as proof of someone’s original eye colour, clothing colour, movements or surroundings.
For more about sources, image use and AI assistance, read the editorial standards.
