Discover 7 Stories Behind Vintage Mugshots

7 Faces. 7 Crimes. 7 Stories From the Past.

These seven haunting mugshots come from the Inmate Photograph Collection on PICRYL, capturing the faces of men who were convicted of robbery during the 1910s and 1920s.

Look closely at their expressions, their eyes, and the faces staring back at the camera. Some appear defiant, others exhausted, while a few seem almost completely emotionless.

Behind each photograph is a life that extended far beyond a prison cell. Some received sentences of 25 years, while others faced 75 years or even life imprisonment.

What fascinates me most is how much these photographs reveal, yet how little we truly know about the people in them. Who were they before their arrests? What happened to them after their release? Did they ever manage to rebuild their lives?

More than a century later, their faces remain frozen in time.
